Best electrolyte supplements for recovery after training in Ireland

Best electrolyte supplements for recovery after training in Ireland

Best electrolyte supplements for recovery after training in Ireland

Key takeaways

  • The best electrolyte supplement for recovery is the one whose sodium dose matches how much you sweat.
  • Many sessions need no supplement at all, because water and a normal meal cover them.
  • Cool, damp weather makes rehydration feel optional, but hard sessions still cost fluid and sodium.
  • If you already take creatine, a combined scoop covers creatine and sodium in one step.
  • No single product wins on every measure, so choose by session, sweat and budget.

Your week as a rugby or GAA player probably looks familiar. S&C on Tuesday, a wet pitch session on Wednesday, a match on Saturday. Cool, damp weather makes rehydration feel optional, so it slips down the list.

Yet Ireland is getting warmer. Met Éireann's annual statement puts the mean air temperature at 11.14°C, with the warmest spring and summer on record. Training layers and indoor halls add heat on top.

This list compares products on the two things that matter most after training: sodium per serving and cost per serving. Every product is on sale in Ireland and priced in euro. Whole Supp was founded in Ireland by a former professional rugby player and a physiologist. Our own product is on the list, weaknesses included.

Do you need an electrolyte supplement after training?

Only after some sessions. For workouts under about an hour, water and a normal meal usually restore what you lost.

Doctors at Houston Methodist recommend water for exercise under an hour, and electrolytes for longer sessions. Orlando Health dietitians use the same threshold: more than an hour of active sweating.

Electrolytes earn their place after long or intense sessions, double days, heavy sweating, or when your next session comes soon. Volume matters as much as content. A review in Sports Medicine advises drinking 125% to 150% of the body mass you lost. The same review found that high-sodium rehydration drinks hold on to more fluid than water.

Weigh yourself before and after training, because 1kg lost is roughly 1 litre of fluid. Don't overdo plain water either. A review of exercise-associated hyponatraemia names drinking too much fluid as its primary cause, and advises drinking to thirst.

What should you look for in an electrolyte supplement?

Start with sodium. It's the electrolyte you lose most in sweat, and it helps your body hold on to fluid.

Sweat sodium varies widely between athletes. In professional footballers, average sweat sodium was 40 to 51 mmol/L across two sessions, with large differences between players. Your teammate's drink tells you little about your own needs.

Sodium per serving is the single most useful number on the pack. Then check these:

  • Every mineral listed in mg, not hidden in a blend.
  • Sugar only when you need fuel for a long session.
  • Batch testing if you compete in tested sport.
  • Cost per serving, which matters on a student budget.
  • A format you will actually use, such as tablets for your kit bag.

Labels show sodium as mg, salt or mmol. EU labelling law requires salt on every label, defined as sodium multiplied by 2.5. So salt in grams times 0.4 gives sodium in grams, and mmol times 23 gives mg.

What are the best electrolyte supplements in Ireland?

SiS GO Hydro

A low-calorie effervescent tablet from Science in Sport, dissolved in 500ml of water. Each tablet gives 345mg of sodium, sweetened with sucralose. 360 Cycles in Dublin sells tubes of 20 for €8.99.

  • Pros: low cost per serving, zero sugar.
  • Cons: moderate sodium for heavy sweaters.
  • Best for: players on a budget after standard sessions.

Applied Nutrition Endurance Hydration

An effervescent tablet with 270mg to 280mg of sodium in 500ml, plus potassium, magnesium and calcium. Lily's Pharmacy sells a pack of six tubes for €36.50.

  • Pros: lowest cost per serving here, zero sugar, added magnesium and calcium.
  • Cons: lower sodium, and a bigger upfront cost for the six-tube pack.
  • Best for: students who want the lowest price per serving.

HIGH5 ZERO

A zero-calorie tablet with 250mg of sodium, designed for 750ml of water. That makes it the most dilute option here. 360 Cycles sells a triple pack of 20 for €18.90.

  • Pros: very cheap, light taste, zero sugar.
  • Cons: lowest sodium per serving here.
  • Best for: shorter or indoor sessions when you want flavour more than salt.

Precision Fuel & Hydration PH 1500

A high-strength tablet giving 750mg of sodium in 500ml, or 1,500mg per litre. The Run Hub in Dublin sells tubes of 10 for €11.99.

  • Pros: highest sodium on the list.
  • Cons: most expensive tablet per serving, and too salty for light sessions.
  • Best for: heavy, salty sweaters, long matches and hot sessions.

Nuun Sport

A tablet with 300mg of sodium and 150mg of potassium, sweetened with stevia leaf extract. It dissolves in about 470ml of water. The Run Hub sells tubes of 10 for €11.

  • Pros: stevia instead of sucralose, good potassium.
  • Cons: pricier than other mid-sodium tablets.
  • Best for: athletes who prefer a stevia-sweetened tablet.

Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier

A powder sachet with about 500mg of sodium and 11g of sugar in 500ml. The sugar adds energy after long sessions, but also adds calories on easy days. Boots Ireland sells boxes of 15. Figures come from the US label, so check the Irish pack.

  • Pros: high sodium, quick carbohydrate for longer sessions.
  • Cons: 11g of sugar per sachet, and pricier per serving.
  • Best for: long, hard sessions when you also want quick carbohydrate.

Whole Supp Elevate Creatine & Electrolyte

Our own powder combines 500mg of sodium with 5g of creatine monohydrate in one 9g scoop. Every mineral is listed in mg, with potassium at 302mg. A 30-serving tub costs €39.99, or €35.99 on subscription.

  • Pros: creatine and sodium in one scoop, high sodium, clear mg labelling.
  • Cons: pricier per serving than most tablets, and one flavour.
  • Best for: athletes who already take creatine and want one daily scoop.

What if you compete in tested sport?

Under strict liability, you answer for any banned substance in your body, whatever its source. Sport Ireland's supplement guidelines tell athletes to "only use batch tested products from a reliable source".

For SiS GO Hydro, Science in Sport states that all its products are Informed Sport certified. PH 1500 and some Applied Nutrition flavours are on the Informed Sport register. HIGH5 also sells a separate batch-tested ZERO.

Elevate is not certified, so choose one of these instead and check the batch number before you buy. If you want a tested recovery meal, our Superfood Meal Shake is Informed Sport certified.

How do you choose the right electrolyte supplement for your training?

Match the product to the session, not the brand.

  • Gym session under an hour: water and your next meal.
  • Wet pitch session or match: a mid-sodium tablet such as SiS GO Hydro or Applied Nutrition.
  • Long, hot or double days: a high-sodium option such as PH 1500.
  • Long session with no meal soon after: a sugar-containing option such as Liquid I.V.
  • Already taking creatine: Elevate covers both in one scoop.

Weigh yourself before and after one hard session to learn your real sweat loss. That one number tells you more than any product list.

Where does Whole Supp fit?

Elevate is built for one job: daily creatine and post-training sodium in a single scoop. Creatine does not dehydrate you. A creatine safety review found it does not upset hydration or electrolyte levels. For more on pairing them, read our guide to creatine and electrolytes together.

Pair it with our Superfood Meal Shake to add 31g of plant protein to your recovery meal.

Frequently asked questions

Do electrolyte supplements really work?

Yes, when you have lost a lot of fluid and sodium. Electrolytes help your body retain the fluid you drink. After short, light sessions, water is enough.

How much sodium do I need after training?

It depends on your sweat. The products here give 250mg to 750mg per serving, so heavy sweaters should start at the higher end.

Are zero-sugar electrolytes effective for recovery?

Yes, for rehydration. Sugar adds energy after long sessions, but your recovery meal can supply that instead.

Can I take electrolyte supplements every day?

Yes, if you count the salt. A 500mg sodium serving adds 1.25g of salt, about a fifth of the FSAI's 6g daily target for adults.

Do electrolytes stop muscle cramps?

Not reliably, because the causes of cramp are still debated. One creatine safety review suggests creatine may lower cramping risk in hot, humid conditions.
